watch surge protection

What types of lightning arresters do you know about watches?

Since its birth, the shock absorber of watches has always played an important role in the shock protection of the movement, protecting the “heart” of the watch. Today, let’s take a look at the types of shock absorbers for watches.

Paraflex shock absorber

Paraflex shock absorber is the exclusive shock absorber of Rolex. Paraflex shock absorber is a new shock absorber launched by Rolex in 2005, which is 50% stronger than the old shock absorber. The old shock absorber used by Rolex is the high-end KIF shock absorber.

Now Rolex does not use Paraflex shock absorbers across the board. To sum up briefly: 3131, 3135, 3555, 3186 use KIF shock absorbers, and 3132, 3136, 3156, 3187, 9001 and other new movements use Paraflex shock absorbers.

Incabloc shock absorber

The Incabloc shock absorber is the most common shock absorber, also known as the horseshoe shock absorber. Many watches using ETA movements use this shock absorber, which is produced by Incablocsa of Switzerland. It uses a set of conical gems and sub-supports to achieve shock resistance.
Many ETA movements use Incabloc shock absorbers, which are also the most widely used shock absorbers. Some high-end and even top-level watches also use Incabloc shock absorbers, such as Glashütte Original, and even some watches such as Lange and Patek Philippe use Incabloc shock absorbers. In addition, ETA’s observatory movements basically use Incabloc shock absorbers.

KIF shock absorber

KIF shock absorbers are generally common in high-end watch movements. They have superior performance, especially for weak shocks. With their single edges, they mitigate the gradual impact, and the shock spring is easy to replace. The three support points balance the pressure, so that the swing axis can return to the best center position.
KIF, with its single edge, mitigates the gradual impact of weak impacts, and the shock spring is easy to replace. The three support points balance the pressure, allowing the balance axis to return to the optimal center position.

Etashoc shock absorber

The triangular shock absorber is the lowest-priced shock absorber. It is customized by Incabloc according to the needs of ETA. Because of its plum blossom-like appearance, the shock absorber is also called plum blossom-shaped shock absorber or three-leaf shock absorber. Due to its low price, it is widely used in various movements of ETA.
The early ETA 2836 and ETA 2824 are equipped with Etashoc. Tissot and Mido entry-level watches both use Etashoc. Its weakness is that its bearings are thicker than Incabloc, so the movement using the Etashoc shock system is not very accurate. It is widely used in moderately priced watches.
